Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. The parents of her were not keen to let her pursue acting until she became an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry was shy during high school and was not a performer. The actress began her acting career at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was transferred from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University, moved into New York in search of television roles. Her small part was in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness led her to California in search of theater jobs. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. Perry was also featured in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. She played the role of the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close familial connection to the character.
